French Southern and Antarctic Lands

Five islands close to Madagascar make up the “Southern” part of this, plus five more even further south, showing yet again that France has not managed to divest itself of its imperial and colonial past. No one lives on any of them. Marine researchers explore for turtles; guano and phosphates have been extracted; they have provided a base for seal-hunting and whaling; there are military garrisons on several, and a meteorological station on one. That is all there is. Vive la France!
